Dave Mathias

About Dave

Product leadership from inside the work.

Dave steps in as the product leader when a company needs one, strengthens product teams and leaders already in place, and builds AI into how product work happens.

Small companies may need an accountable product leader while they prepare for a permanent hire. Larger organizations may already have product leadership and need stronger teams or a shared AI-enabled way of working. Dave works at either depth without separating the advice from the work itself.

His path from chemistry and law to analytics, product management, and AI shaped how he works: crossing boundaries, translating between disciplines, and helping teams move when executives, product, technology, analytics, and customers see the problem differently.

Dave spent five years accountable for product outcomes inside operating companies, leading product, design, and AI at Shipwell and leading product at Cargill's AI Hub. He is also a Senior Lecturer at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota.

How Dave works

Work alongside the team. Build capability that lasts.

The role is sized to the need while important work keeps moving.

Work inside the real problem

Leadership, coaching, and building happen alongside consequential product and AI work, not in a separate program.

Match the role to the situation

Dave can step in as the product leader, coach the leaders already in place, or build alongside a team. The role changes with the need.

Leave capability behind

The goal is stronger judgment, practical working habits, and reusable tools that continue after the engagement ends.

Build toward a capable handoff.

When Dave holds a leadership seat, the work includes building the operating rhythm, documenting the reasoning, developing the people already there, and preparing the permanent leader to start with context.
